About the Goli otok „Ante Zemljar” Association

The Goli otok „Ante Zemljar” Association was founded in Zagreb in 1991 by former prisoners of Goli otok. Today, the Association brings together members of their families, friends of deceased prisoners, researchers, artists, and citizens interested in preserving the memory of Goli otok and Sveti Grgur.

The Association gathers people with different experiences and knowledge around the same goal: for Goli otok to be recognised, protected, and responsibly presented to the public as a site of political repression, human suffering, and a culture of remembrance. Our goal is for Goli otok to one day be protected as a cultural landscape and established as a properly arranged memorial site.

Our activities

  • informing the public about Goli otok and Sveti Grgur
  • advocating for the protection of the site
  • organising public discussions, exhibitions, and educational programmes
  • cooperating with researchers and institutions
  • promoting a culture of remembrance and the protection of human rights

Cooperation

The work of the Association has been marked by cooperation with the City of Zagreb, the City of Rijeka, the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb, the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria, Europa Nostra, Documenta – Centre for Dealing with the Past, ministries of the Republic of Croatia, and representatives of foreign countries in Croatia.
